Joan Zen and Huey Lewis Rock their Neighbors

Joan Zen and Huey Lewis

In an “American Idol” world, the Bitterroot Valley is fortunate to have two residents with the kind of talent that hearkens to days past. The immense fame of Huey Lewis is certainly matched by the spellbinding talent of Joan Zen. Joan bares her soul through her original songs which she delivers with the passion that can only come from expressing what is deep within.

I have to admit, I didn’t know who Joan Zen was prior to this performance. I could name less then a handful of musical performers who began their careers after the late 1970’s. Prior to attending the show a friend told me Joan Zen was similar to Janice Joplin. This comparison fueled my anticipation as Janice Joplin was an icon who I revered. I am unsure where the Joplin comparison came from, as Joan’s music is a far departure from the music of Joplin. The connection I saw between Joplin and Joan was the passion in the delivery of their music.

The truly great artists reveal themselves to us through their art. Joan’s music is a unique blend of funk and blues delivered with plenty of soul. Her latest album, Youniverse, is available HERE. Get yourself a copy and I’m sure you’ll become an instant fan as I did.

Joan and Huey performed at Western Heritage Days in Stevensville, Montana on Saturday, June 14.
