2008 Bitterroot National Forest Elk Hunting Forecast
Nothing is looked forward to with more anticipation than a new elk hunting season. Then again is anything more exciting than a bull elk screaming bugles and tearing up trees and brush as he heads toward a hunter’s calls? If there is I certainly haven’t experienced it.

Deadline for Fall Turkey Permits and Supertag Lottery is July 31.
Hunters have until July 31 to purchase SuperTag Lottery chances for elk, deer, bison, antelope and mountain lion hunting licenses.
July 31 is also the deadline to apply for fall turkey permits. The proposal for the Bitterroot valley is 300 tags.
All applications are $5. Mailed applications must be received by 5:00 pm July 31. Online applications can be made until 11:45 pm on July 31.

Preseason Big Game Scouting on a Mountain Bike
The Bitterroot National Forest contains many trails and gated roads
offering access to mountain bikes. Utilizing a mountain bike to access areas off the beaten path and locate hunting areas is highly productive. Many of these areas are open to ATV and motorcycle traffic during the summer months. Some remain open through archery season. Antler Shed Hunting

Spring is a wonderful time of year. The doldrums of winter give way to a seemingly endless number of outdoor pursuits.
One of my favorites is “shed hunting”, where a person walks the countryside in search of antlers recently shed by deer, elk and moose. I always combine shed hunting with another favorite activity, archery stump shooting or roving, as some call it. I will cover stump shooting and roving in a future post. [Read more →]

Montana Wolf Hunting: Season Set

The Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks has set a 2008 wolf hunting season for September 15- November 30.
The Federal Government has delisted gray wolves from the endangered species list, opening the door to Montana managing the wolves. Unfortunately, some radical animal rights groups are going to challenge the delisting, along with the hunting of wolves in the courts.
