Bitterroot National Forest Camping

West Fork Ranger District

Alta Campground

Directions: Take the West Fork Road 4 miles south of Darby and follow west for 30 miles to Alta.

Rate: $7 per day from May 1- October 31. Campground is open year long.

Description: This is a primitive campground on the West Fork Bitterroot above Painted Rocks State Park. The river is small here as are the trout. Fishing can be very good to excellent. Alta is a remote area near the Idaho border. There are numerous Forest Service Roads that one can venture on to see the surrounding mountains. A highly recommended trip is to Horse Creek Hot Springs. There are a total of 15 tent sites at Alta Campground.
